Money Matters: Money Smart Week 2017

Money Smart Week was created in 2002 by the Federal Reserve Board of Chicago. It is a public awareness campaign to help consumers better manage their personal finances. Below is a short video about Money Smart Week 2017.

I have been involved with the Money Smart Week campaign for the past 4 years and believe it is important for all of us to be knowledgeable about our finances!

In my work as a daily money manager, I have met many older adults who do not have an understanding of basic financial information. Sometimes it is because one spouse handled the finances and when they passed away, it left the surviving spouse ill equipped to mange the financial affairs.

Sometimes people were very capable in managing their finances, but due to cognitive decline, chronic illness or a debilitating disease, they were left unable to handle their financial affairs. During Money Smart Week, there will be classes and events to discuss money topics across the life span.

Money Smart Week 2017

There are many ways to become involved with Money Smart Week. You can attend an event in your area or offer to help out at a MSW event that is scheduled.

On April 23rd, I will distribute financial information covering a wide variety of topics to attendees at the Badger Rock Community Center’s Pop-up Market and Vendor Fair.

“Entrepreneurs & Money: Let’s Talk” is my second event for Money Smart Week. It will be held on 4/26 at Matrix Coworking. This is an opportunity for entrepreneurs to discuss the financial challenges of owning a business while also sharing their tips and strategies for managing these challenges.

Whether or not you attend a Money Smart Week event, I encourage you to do at least one thing for your financial health during April, which is Financial Literacy month.

For instance: Obtain your credit report, Open a savings account, Create a budget or Make a commitment to save more each month.

Remember that the quality of life in your later years can be impacted greatly by the financial decisions you make today!
